ADAD 28: Last drawing

Okay, so last two drawings... 

The second one I have made into a painting. 

We are studying the works of the Dutch painter Leo Gestel 

(a nice exhibition of his paintings is now to be seen in the Singer Museum). 

He used a lot of different styles, one of which is pointillism. 

We were asked to make a painting in this style, inspired by his use of colours.

I have enjoyed this A Drawing a Day-project.

It is not always easy, I find it difficult to find subjects to draw.

But this pushes me to experiment and try drawing different things, 

and I experienced that drawing grows on me. The more I draw, the easier it gets.

And I also discover which style I like.

Inspired by an Italian cookbook with beautiful pictures,

I made this drawing with pen and watercolour:

ADAD 23 last shape

Reminds me of the Sami people in the north of Scandinavia,

They often use these colours (with the addition of yellow).

I started with the shape of drops of rain, drew some lines and they turned into shellfish.

ADAD 21 starting with one shape

I like being inspired by the constriction of a shape,

I draw one shape, make a sort of pattern and then decide what I shall make of it.

I could make a stamp out of it or make something with the shapes, make them larger...

Flowers are always a favorite subject, here I drew beyond the paintblob, just experimenting.

The picture is a bit dark... it was a grey day here.

Simple flower drawing, carried by the wind:

Here in Europe you often see these older women wearing headscarves,

large coats to keep warm and flower dresses. 

I like them, they are strong and always busy 

taking care of groceries, family or their garden.

In preparing a lesson for children on painting a still life I made these small drawings:

ADAD 13 and 14 Inspired by lace

In a fashion magazine I saw a sweater with a lace print, 

it inspired me to draw my own lace (with pen and pencil).

The possibilities for variations are endless... 

I have been to the Museum of Lace once, all those handmade decorations

are so wonderful to see. I also have several books on the history of lace, 

here in the Netherlands all the provinces have their own design.

I have never painted lace, but have seen many paintings in which the lace is painted so fragile...

I want to try it myself one time.

Watercolour is a nice medium, I do not have a lot of technical knowledge about it,

so therefore I just experiment and play with it.

ADAD 8 is an Alphabet

Handwriting is very trendy at the moment and I read about an assignment 

to write one letter in 100 different shapes, quite a challenge. 

I quickly made a drawing of the letter Z and came up with 23 designs.

I made this alphabet, I've always loved writing and calligraphy. 

My grandmother had a calligraphy pen and taught me how to use it.

I made this one with a marker pen.

ADAD 6 and 7 drawings

Yesterday I have been working at a life-size painting, I liked it a lot!

But down o the small drawing work:

A small sketch, using three colours of pencil at once, I like the effect.

Here, I used the pencil on its side shaping this model.

Just the simple pen you use for writing makes a nice drawing tool for small portraits.

ADAD watercolour 3 and 4

While preparing some lessons for children I drew some animals myself.

I love to use an old watercolour box to experiment.

 These rabbits and bird appeared:

It does not always turn out the way you want, but experimenting helps me to find new ways of colour combination or drawing methods.

A drawing a day number one

It is already February again! Time for my yearly project of making a drawing a day.

This is the first one:

Made with a fineliner and colourpencil. 

Drawing a shape and then colouring can be very relaxing. 

I thought about colour use and how to use your pencil in various ways.
