ADAD #28: last drawing of the month

 Today is the last day of February and here my drawing-project ends. And it ends with a portrait, inspired by a video of Koosje Koene I used a brush-pen of Talens and instead of a pencil I used a calligraphy marker. It inspired me to maybe buy some more brush-pens in softer colours and to experiment with that. I think I've been mostly drawing people lately, I find them interesting. And further I like experimenting with techniques and materials, mostly abstract work.

Here Spring is coming and luckily there is a bit of sun. I hope to go on inspired and with focus. Next blog will be coming Monday. See you then!

ADAD #27: a picture of a woman

Here is another drawing in a square frame, this time of a woman looking into the camera:

 This drawing is another square picture, this time of the Lofoten Islands in Norway, the beach, the canoes and the mountains in the distance:

ADAD #25: little squares

When you take pictures on your phone you can choose for the square size, this makes a nice frame to make some drawings. For instance this drawing of today of one of my walks in the forest. I used a calligraphy pen and coloured pencils.

I drew another hand and I like the scribbly unneat way of drawing with the calligraphy pen:

 So another attempt at drawing my hand, now as a fist. I like the irregularity of the calligraphy pen:

ADAD #22: a mistake

 With a calligraphy pen I drew my left hand, and it did not turn out really well. One finger is obviously out of proportion but I could not fix the mistake, maybe only by throwing away the drawing. I decided to show it anyway, because I liked the exercise.

ADAD #21: a part of...

 I drew a bowl of pears with pen, watercolour and pencil and could not take a good picture. So I am just showing a part of it, and this makes it well.. different.

ADAD #20: a lazy cat

It is amazing how cats can shape their body and paws in the most complicated ways. And how they can be very lazy, stretched to the max. So with this in mind I made a pen drawing and coloured it with waterbased-paint:

 Now this is a different set of glasses, with some sparkling cheeky eyes:

The other day I was watching a video listening to a conversation. The woman was wearing these large glasses so you cannot help but be drawn to the shape and the eyes. So I have been drawing them:

 

ADAD #15: the red continues...

 Several shades and materials in red: how can I draw the pomegranate-fruit in different ways? 

Let's just try:

ADAD #14: and again

 I have always liked to look at one subject from different angles, for instance by using different materials to draw the same shape. So this time I used a Sharpie-pen to make the outline and accents and used pencil to give colour.

ADAD #13: a red dishcloth

 I wanted to use the colour red, so I looked up some pictures in red and with a pencil I drew this dishcloth, a nice shape with lights and darks in it.

ADAD #12: A branch of fruit

Following the continuous-drawing-technique of not taking your pen of the paper while drawing, I now took this branch as an example. Little apples in bright red on a brown branch, happy colours to brighten your day in February. 

ADAD #11: magnolia in paint

 This time I used acrylic paints to capture the magnolia, not so precise, more of an impression. I used coloured pencil to emphasize the shape:

 Continuing on the Magnolia-theme I took a picture of one of the flowers in bloom in our home. The yellow core, the delicate white pink flowers and the shape of the petals make it an interesting subject. I used coloured pencil on a piece of paper which already had some acrylic paint on it:

 And now for something different: a branch of the magnolia tree. We have a beautiful one in our garden and I cut some branches to take inside the house. When I was watching an online class by Jeanne Oliver (the Art of Wintering) she used a branch as an example, and I drew along with her. It is a one-line-drawing in pen and then I used aquarel pencils to give colour.

ADAD#8: just plain pencil

 With just a plain pencil I made this drawing in my sketchbook, using the sharp tip and the soft side of the pencil. 

ADAD#7: portrait in blue

A drawing in blue pencil today: small sketches, trying to sculpt the portrait with soft pencil strokes, and next to it a sketch with stronger lines. 

ADAD #6: grey

 I just used an ordinary pencil and a picture from youtube. I worked on it until I felt it was okay.

The proportions weren't right at first, there needed to be more volume in the hair and I drew the eyes too close together. But I adjusted that.

ADAD #5: tough guy

 Okay, so a tough guy in happy colours haha, why not? These days you see a lot of athletes with these haircuts: short sides and a lot of styled hair on top.

ADAD #4: fantasy

 This time I used a selection of different colours. I sort of like to draw quickly without overthinking and then step back and see the result. It is the experimenting which I like.

 Today's drawing is another portrait in coloured pencil, I think the tip was a bit blunt so then you make more mistakes, or lines go too thick. Anyways, this is the result:

A drawing a day in February #1

 February is starting today and for me it is the month of a small drawingproject, which I have been doing for a couple of years now: a drawing a day in February (ADAD). I kind of wanted to skip this year because there are other things to do... but it is just fun seeing the results.

So I am just going to do it, and see what will happen. Portraits are a favourite subject so I am starting with this one:
