This weekend I started two new portraits, and this is the beginning: a sketch for dimensions, composition. I start with a background colour, and then sketch with either a small brush or some charcoal.
There can be many problems: the composition is not right, the head is too large in comparison, something in the face is off-balance. I take some steps back and try to solve these, you'd better have a good sketch to start with, otherwise you might end up unhappy with the result.
